Stellenbosch Work Centre for Adults with Disabilities

Rusthof back garden

A supportive space for work, dignity, and inclusion

Located in the heart of Stellenbosch, the Stellenbosch Work Centre offers a protective and empowering environment for adults with disabilities who are not yet able—or may never be able—to access the open labour market. The Centre currently supports 48 beneficiaries from the greater Stellenbosch region, providing them with meaningful, paid work opportunities, skills development, and psychosocial support tailored to their individual abilities.

Each participant contributes according to their unique level of functioning, building self-esteem, independence, and a strong sense of purpose through activities like folding, sorting, assembling, packaging, and photocopying. In addition to work skills, the Centre provides access to life skills training, job preparation, leadership development, and recreational activities—all designed to enhance both personal growth and social integration.

The Centre’s broader mission is rooted in economic empowerment. Through innovative initiatives like the LEER range of handcrafted Nguni rugs, it continues to build toward becoming a financially independent social enterprise.

The Challenge

To support the Centre’s vision of providing a safe, functional, and dignified environment, the Isipani Foundation partnered with the organisation to implement a series of essential upgrades. The work was designed to not only improve the daily experience for beneficiaries and staff but also to help position the Centre as a sustainable, forward-looking facility.

The following improvements were successfully completed:

    • Complete interior repainting to refresh and brighten work and communal areas
    • Full kitchen refurbishment, including the installation of new wall and floor tiles, and the fitting of modern cupboards
    • Renovation of male and female ablution facilities, with new ceilings, tiles, paintwork, and servicing of all toilets
    • Construction of a wheelchair-accessible bathroom, featuring a walk-in shower, disabled toilet, and hand basin to meet the needs of mobility-impaired users
    • Installation of a mezzanine floor above the ablution and office areas to expand usable space
    • Repair of the external entrance ramp, ensuring safe, smooth access for all beneficiaries and visitors

This initiative reflects the Isipani Foundation’s three core focus areas: education and training, community development, and economic empowerment. By supporting a facility that provides work skills, leadership training, and structured pathways to independence for people with disabilities, the Foundation directly contributes to a more inclusive and economically active community.

The improvements made at the Stellenbosch Work Centre align closely with Isipani Construction’s values of integrity, collaboration, and innovation—ensuring a more accessible and uplifting space where dignity and opportunity are not just ideals, but realities. Through thoughtful infrastructure upgrades and a shared vision of sustainable empowerment, this partnership helps unlock the full potential of every individual who enters the Centre’s doors.
