The Sable Square Shopping Centre was developed on the corner of Bosmansdam and Ratanga Roads in Milnerton and consisted of four buildings constructed around a central piazza. The building’s design was characterised by a bold use of the colour red to accentuate design features.
Isipani was involved in Phase II of the development, which was completed in 2008, and the renovation of the Pick ’n Pay building, which was completed in 2009. The Pick ’n Pay project proved to be very challenging as some of the neighbouring retailers had already opened for business. Pedestrian safety became a primary concern.
The Sable Square contract was also characterised by several environmental specifications that included the building of two small dams, sealed to collect all cement sediments. Steel trays were also used to capture possible diesel and oil spillages from machinery.
In 2016 a small section of the mall’s buildings was damaged by fire. The existing China Town area was subsequently demolished and new facilities were created that included a new China Town retail area. Suspended concrete floors were also constructed over the China Town retail area to accommodate a new gym. An adjacent building was also upgraded, and a new floor was added to the building to create more office space.
The most challenging part of this contract was to evaluate ways to tie in the new with the existing which we achieved successfully in collaboration with the consultant engineering firm. Fire protection features were also added to both the new and existing buildings.

“Ekcon was responsible for the structural and mechanical engineering in the reconstruction of Sable Square Block C after it was destroyed by fire. The client decided at the same time to add an additional office floor as well as an extra floor for a gym over the existing China Town. It was quite a challenging job to demolish damaged post tensioned slabs and to construct the new floors with modern facades in a working retail environment. Jacques and his team did an excellent job and it was always a pleasure to work with the Isipani Team! Their no nonsense, business first attitude to the job makes them a pleasure to work with!”
