Rupert Art Gallery

The Rupert Art Museum on the banks of Stellenbosch’s Eerste River, houses more than 350 paintings, sculptures, ceramic works and tapestries from the late Anton and Huberte Rupert’s private art collection. The Rupert Art Foundation is the custodian of the collection. The building has an H-shaped design to reflect traditional Cape Dutch architecture.
When the museum was constructed in 2013 site managers and foremen would work directly with the late Huberte Rupert, often attending meetings at her house in Stellenbosch to discuss the plans or layout of the gardens or parking areas. Samples of tiles or fittings would also be taken to her for her approval. Visits would often include milk tart and tea.
The museum was refurbished in 2019 to add an entrance foyer, shed, management terrace, sculpture gallery and library. Existing gallery spaces were also renewed with new wall linings, floor finishes and improved lighting. All the art works were stored on site during construction, so security, access and sectional completions were all organised and arranged around the valuable collection. The new entrance foyer — called the Glass Box — has a frameless glass design and went through multiple re-designs.
“Professioneel en indien probleme ontstaan het, was dit deur middel van spanwerk opgelos.”
