Construction work at Vergelegen Mediclinic in Somerset West included storm-water drainage and civil works, as well as alterations and additions to the existing hospital. As the hospital had experienced severe flooding during the late spring of 2013, priority was given to the construction of an underground concrete storm-water canal, 163 metre in length, with a secondary brick canal on top of it to carry away normal rainwater. Speed bumps were also placed strategically around the hospital to divert water during sudden downpours. The flood had also caused much damage to the hospital’s cardiac, obstetric and paediatric units west of the administration and reception block. The building that housed these units was consequently demolished and replaced by a new three storey building that could accommodate an expanded emergency centre, obstetric and paediatric units, neonatal critical-care unit, cardiac unit and hybrid theatre, new radiology department and additional consulting rooms.

The next phase of the development was to upgrade the hospital’s reception area, restaurant, and orthopaedic, surgical and general critical-care units, as well as the pharmacy and medical unit. All existing facilities were also refurbished. The contract also included features related to water and energy conservation, and solar-water heating.
