Haasendal Gables

Haasendal Gables is a shopping mall in Kuils River that services a large residential development on the corner of Bottelary and Saxdowns Roads. The mall was a new build for Isipani and consisted of a main building of 11,900 m² with a lettable area of 10,988 m².

The mall was constructed around an open-air courtyard. The retail space has two anchor tenants, Super Spar and Dis-Chem Pharmacy, and 34 line shops and restaurants. A second building, a McDonalds drive-through, was also constructed. Civil works included the parking area around the buildings. The mall’s impressive 12-metre portals were a challenging feature of the build. Each concrete column was designed to end in a 45-degree arched beam, with steel beams and exposed timber trusses spanning the columns. A total of 15 portals had to be constructed. Haasendal Gables’ three entrance portals were constructed with a timber-grain finish to add to the mall’s rustic finishes.

Eskom servitudes on the property presented a major challenge. The servitudes were related to two major 11,000 V overhead pylons crossing the site. The construction team had to comply with a very strict method statement on how construction work could proceed under the lines.
