Cavalli Restaurant is situated on the Cavalli Stud Farm on the R44 between Stellenbosch and Somerset West.

The project included the construction of a public art gallery, winery and tasting facility, restaurant with outdoor dining area, and a parking area for 57 vehicles. The two-storey building’s design designated the basement area for art galleries, a private wine cellar and dining area, a kitchen and a wine shop, with a lift connecting the basement to the ground floor.

The ground floor area was reserved for a restaurant and outdoor entertainment areas. The contract also involved the construction of a dam along the side of the restaurant. The dam was not only designed to serve as an attractive architectural feature but also as a cooling system to circulate cool air through the building. A green garden wall was installed on the southern facade of the building.

The site’s clay soil presented a major challenge during the early phase of the development, which started in mid-winter, as the excavations would fill up with wet clay and water every time it rained.
