The new Ackermans Distribution Centre in Wembley Park, has transformed the landscape of the area, becoming the central hub for distributing products to all Ackermans stores across the Western Cape. This ambitious project required a complete overhaul of the former Wembley Industrial Park, with all existing structures demolished to make way for the expansive new development.

In February 2023 Construction started, by March, the first section of the main warehouse platform was ready. The platform was developed in seven stages, each requiring meticulous work such as locking out existing services, carrying out demolition, and forming the base and foundation platforms. This enabled construction to proceed with the setting out and excavation of the warehouse’s foundations.

The main warehouse spans an impressive 35,000m² and features a 10,000m² post-tension mezzanine floor. The warehouse was constructed in three distinct phases to ensure efficient progress and delivery. The facility includes three adjoining buildings: the main office block, POD Office 1, and POD Office 2. These office spaces collectively provide 3,500m² of functional space spread across multiple levels, which have been meticulously designed and finished.

Beyond the warehouse itself, the perimeter of the facility hosts several auxiliary structures, including two guardhouses, workshops, hazmat storage rooms, refuse areas, and a pump room equipped with fire tanks. The site also includes MDB/TRF/RMU rooms, ICV chambers, and a total of 36,000m² of hardstand surfaces, ensuring seamless operations and logistics.

The project extended to external infrastructure, with significant upgrades to the surrounding area. This included the installation of new perimeter fencing, taxi bays, pedestrian islands, walkways, road kerbs, and the resurfacing of the main road. Stormwater management was a critical aspect of the development, featuring the creation of a new continuation pond designed to collect and channel stormwater to the existing Kuils River catchment area behind the site.

Despite its functional purpose as a warehouse, the facility boasts several high-end finishes. Off-shutter concrete feature walls, cantilevered balconies, and slabs give the building a modern, sleek appearance. Precast concrete cladding, incorporating off-cuts from Ackermans’ clothing range, adds a unique decorative element, while polished concrete floors enhance the building’s contemporary aesthetic.

Now fully operational, the Ackermans Distribution Centre at Wembley Park stands as a cutting-edge logistics facility. With its extensive infrastructure, innovative design, and premium finishes, it sets a new standard for distribution centres in the Western Cape.
