Mediclinic Stellenbosch

Isipani’s work at Mediclinic Stellenbosch involved two very distinct projects. In 2011 the hospital group approached Isipani to build a mock-up of a private ward and passage based on specifications the hospital group had developed at its facilities in Switzerland. The building site had to be completely sealed off from the rest of the hospital, so the only access was by way of an external window opening.

The project took two months to complete as it required many rebuilds as specifications were being refined. Once completed, every feature of the ward had to be measured up to create detailed blueprints that would allow the Mediclinic Group to duplicate the specifications in its other hospitals in South Africa.

Isipani subsequently tendered for a second contract to build new wards, refurbish the hospital’s reception area, offices, pharmacy, rest areas and existing wards, and to remodel the hospital’s ICU ward to the new specifications. The project’s real challenge was that the work had to be done while the hospital remained operational. Only one ward could be done at a time, and each time the ward had to be isolated from the rest of the hospital. The hospital’s passages were particularly challenging to do because the ceilings had to be taken out to install the services, the walls had to be replastered, the floor covering replaced and new bumper rails installed. A lot of the work had to be done at night without making too much noise as not to disturb the hospital’s patients.
